A 31-year-old member asked:
Can you tell me what someone with a cleft palate (also called a harelip) sound like?

Plastic Surgery 19 years experience
Nasal speech: Typically cleft palate is surgically corrected as a child, and there would be a team of medical professionals that participate- speech pathologists, social work, orthodontics, etc. If this is not corrected (and even sometimes when it is) the defects leaves abnormal communication between the oral and nasal cavities which results in hypernasal speech esp. W/ hard consonants (ie say cup cake).
