Puberty: The average age of puberty is less than 16, but there is a broad spread. The age of onset of puberty is easier to pinpoint in girls (menstrual period) than in boys. Are you very thin or very athletic? Female gymnasts, ballerinas tend to have delayed puberty; boys don't seem to get this. So you may be normal, but best to get checked out by your pediatrician.

Variable: Girls generally start between ages 8-11 and boys between 9 and 12. For girls the first sign is a growth spurt and then development of pubic hair and breasts. For boys puberty generally starts with an increase in testicular size and their growth spurt comes later. Menses generally starts about when a girl's growth spurt is done.

Yes: Puberty starting before age 8 in girls had been considered "precocious." it has been noticed that a good number of girls, especially of ethnic minority, start at 7 years of age. The mean age for menarche dropped only a few months during the last 30 years, though. It's been postulated that excess adiposity (overweight) enhances the progression of puberty.

Support: You may help explain certain things such as acne, menstruation, erection, hair growth, voice changes, etc., however, you don't want to do that in a way that may get them offended. You may come to their doctor along with them if they ask you to. Also, you want to be a good rôle model for them if they experience behavioral challenges at school or/and home to help them steer away from trouble.

Transition: There are 5 tanner stages: stage 1 is when the body is pre-pubertal. Stage 5 is when breast development in girls, pubic hair span and testicular volume in boys reach what would be seen in adults. The stages in between are about the transitions of pubertal development.
