Neurosurgery 34 years experience
Herniated disc: The most common cause of a pinched nerve in a young person is a herniated disc. This occurs when some disc material-the cushion that exists between each vertebral body-protrudes out from its normal confines. It then squeezes or pinches a nerve root that is passing by. This leads to radiating pain and numbness down a limb. In the severe cases-weakness exists. Neurosurgery decompression is effective.
