Muscle soreness: Any time you perform exercises that give your body and muscles a challenge, you can end up with muscle soreness. Sometimes this occurs immediately but other times it might not actually appear for up to two days later (delayed onset muscle soreness). This is normal and once you become better conditioned, will occur less often.

Lactic acid buildup: The cause of the muscle pain after strenuous activity is a buildup of Lactic Acid after an anaerobic workout. Whenever you work a muscle group more than it is accustomed to, it uses energy in a way that produces the lactic acid. Mild swelling also results from the process. As the body clears and converts the acid, the burn goes away.
