Therapy, DBT: Psychotherapy can help to decrease self-harming. Especially dbt can help with self-harming and feeling emotionally overwhelmed (which can precede self-harming). Check out www.Dbtselfhelp.Com to get started working on other options immediately, and look for a therapist in your area through that website or others.

Can there be lasting side effects of self-harm scars?

Yes: For starters, all scars will be permanent. That means you will have an unpleasant reminder on your body when you are a grandmother, long after the pain of whatever it was that caused self-harm has been forgotten. Another danger is that if the problems that cause self-harm aren't addressed, they may escalate. A cut tendon/nerve may not be fully repairable causing permanent numbness or stiffness.

Camoflaging scars: Scars may be difficult to explain, but there are methods to camouflage them so you can focus on more positive topics of conversation. Carboxytherapy, microneedling, tissue expansion, surgical tissue rearrangement, etc. Are the medical methods that involve some recovery. Body makeup, strategic jewelry, and clothing are simpler, but sometimes inconvenient methods.

What can I do to treat my self harm scars?

Dr. Otto Placik answered

Improve NOT remove: It is possible to improve scars but nearly impossible to remove scars. This requires an assessment of thickness, width, depth, color, texture, location, direction, behavior, adjacent/adherent tissues etc. Depending on the evaluation, an apporopriate intervention(s) is prescribed or recommended. Techniques used may inlcude excision, incision, flap/graft, rearrangement, resurfacing, laser, etc.
