my 92 year old mother has a productive cough. should she take cough medicine? usually her cough is dry but feels she is coming down with a cold.

Not helpful: Over the counter cough syrup has been shown to not work very well. She could try taking 2-3 teaspoons of honey by itself or in some warm water. There is some research that it can help with a cough, at least in children. It won't hurt her unless she has diabetes. At 92, it's probably best to err on the side of caution and take her to her doctor to be sure a serious illness isn't overlooked.

Yes: Most pts. May benefit from over the counter anti-cough medicines like guaiphenesín with dextrometorphan unless they have had an indesirable efect before. Codeína is stronger but it will dry the secretions causing mucus plugs interfering with air movement. At her age pneumonias are common and deadly so she must be followed closely
