A 44-year-old female asked:

when someone has a lumbar epidural injection how long does it take when you are able to feel your legs? this is a outpatient procedure?

Varies: Lumbar epidural steroid injection is an outpatient procedure. The loss of feeling you are asking about and the duration depends on the type and strength of the local anesthesia used. A low concentration (for example 0.0625% bupivicaine) is unlikely to result in leg weakness or numbness but is usually strong enough to relieve some of the pain symptoms.

Minutes to 2 hours: There are several reasons this may happen. The fact that you have back pain indicates you have existing damage to those nerves in your back. Any injection to the area can irritate or even damage the nerves further. Local anesthetics often used in epidurals for back pain can last longer as a result of the existing damage. You should see a doctor to asses and treat before it becomes permanent.

It depends : On the medications used, but probably 1-2 hours. Discuss your time concerns with your pain doc and he can adjust accordingly.

Insect bites: It could be any insect bite. See the doctor if it does not clear up in few days. If it is itchy you can try Hydrocortisone cream and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) by mouth.

My husband is diabetic and has numb toes on one foot and today has bulging veins on that shin and numbness and puffiness. Will this wait till monday to see doctor or is this an ER situation?

Have it looked at: If it is only on one foot then there is a chance he could have a blood clot in that leg and should be looked at today. Swelling in one foot and numbness that came on all of a sudden shouldnt wait. Good luck.
