May clarify: Trace proteinuria isn't worth a workup, but 1+ or greater may be. If its not orthostatic proteinuria (i.e., your first-voided morning urine is protein-free and your proteinuria results from standing up), labs and imaging may be worthwhile. Tumors are more likely to produce blood than protein in the urine, but the sonogram's a great way to rule one out.

Depends...: Ultrasound of the kidneys may show normal kidneys or may show evidence of a chronic kidney disease. It can also show stones or abnormal dilatation of the renal collecting systems (where the urine passes through).
