does recreational use always lead to addiction?

Always? No: But everybody who is a addicted started out as a recreational user. Generally in life and in medicine you never want to say 'always', and you never want to say 'never' . There will always be exceptions. It also makes a difference what recreational drug you are talking about. Some are more likely to be addicting than others. And of course some people are more likely to be addicted than other people.

Depends: Depends on pleasure centers in brain but increases the risk of addiction.
Dr. Philip Gilly
Addiction Medicine 39 years experience
That depends ...: There is a "pleasure center" in your brain designed to respond to good food, good relations, and good work. A substance or behavior that generates a more than expected reward can lead to incentive sensitization if the person is biologically predisposed to addiction. The faster the drug effect reaches and then leaves the brain, the more craving will develop, such as with nicotine or crack cocaine.

Dr. Jeff Blixt
Addiction Medicine 24 years experience
The Routine but.....: What makes addiction bad, is alcohol inheriantly bad, is oxycotin inheriantly bad. No they are not, it is what these chemicals cause people to do with addictions. "they are but a symptom of the disease" borrowed from aa. Yes they drive the addicts routine but it is that routine or lifestyle that causes all the problems. And not all addictions involve drugs but can be just as destructive.

How do my age and gender affect my addiction?

Dr. Jerald Ratner
Psychiatry 51 years experience
It depends: Most addicts as they get older tend to diminish their addiction if not stop it altogether. A good drug rehab program is best. The gender differences used to be males greater than females, but because of the epidemic of drugs the ratio is more even.
