can a woman have a period and still be pregnant?

Light Bleeding: Rest assured that in the early weeks of pregnancy, a little spotting or bleeding is very common. The most common cause for experiencing a brown discharge during pregnancy, especially in the later half of the first trimester, is that the body is getting rid of the older blood remnants in the cervix. As the baby grows, the original blood which is used to protect the womb is no longer required.

Can woman get pregnant on her period?

Not exactly: Women can get pregnant when they are bleeding especially when the bleeding is not their normal period. Not all vaginal blleeding means they are on their menstrual cycle. Ovulation occurs 14 days before the cycle starts and this is the optimal time to get pregnant. When a true menstrual cycle comes it means ovulation did not occur. Having sex during that time would be low risk for pregnancy.

No: If a woman is menstruating then she can not get pregnant. Although you must remember that not all vaginal bleeding is menstrual bleeding. Vagina, cervical or midcycle bleeding can often be confused with menstrual bleeding.

A 37-year-old member asked:
Is it still possible for a woman to become pregnant after she receives her period?

The reason:: It would be possible if a woman with a very short menstrual cycle still had viable sperm in her body at the time of ovulation. It isn't common but it is one more reason to consistently use some form of protection when sexually active.

A 40-year-old member asked:
Could a woman get pregnant right after her period ends?

Dr. Heidi Fowler answered

Possible: Although not likely, it is possible for a woman to conceive at this time. If she has short menstrual cycles and there is still viable sperm after the egg is released than pregnancy could occur. Please use protection for every act of vaginal intercourse if you aren't ready for pregnancy.
