Depends: The probably with substance abuse during depression is that you can start to treat your symptoms with alcohol or other drugs. They do not really treat your depression, just distract you from the symptoms. If you are depressed it is best to speak to a physician or mental health provider instead of trying to treat yourself with alcohol or drugs.

Without help, maybe.: Depression can, untreated, lead to all kinds of destructive behavior including abuse of drugs or alcohol. Depression clouds judgement, blunts at times moral and ethical standards and may cause life style decisions to be made out of a cloud of hopeless an helpless feelings. Decisions made during an untreated depression cause havoc in ones life including choices leading to addiction.
