Treatment in Context: My focus = understanding what hopes/dreams/plans the person has or at least once had...On understanding what makes her/him happy ; gives her/his life meaning. It's not easy 2overcome an addiction so it's impt 2how much the person wants 2kick it ; how prepared s/he is 2 get thru discomfort. I certainly want 2 know what the substance does for her/him - what pleasure or relief s/he gets from it.

drug treatment: If someone sees me for help w a drug problem, either they realize they need help or someone else is pressuring them to seek help. If it's for someone else, it won't work unless the person finds their own reason for getting clean. There are many paths to recovery - treatment programs, aa / na, lifering or sos, smart recovery, therapy. It is essential to have support from other recovering addicts.

The 3 "active ingredients" in successful recovery are 1) support from others who are also in recovery (who can be more non-judgmental than family or friends), 2) a structured way of working on yourself 1 bit at a time (12 steps and/or therapy), and a spiritual change (if you are uncomfortable w the word spiritual, substitute "emotional change").

The point of recovery is not abstaining from drugs, it is making your life feel better and having things work better. All recovery approaches have this focus, 12 step or not. Only the first of the 12 steps is about alcohol or drugs - the other 11 steps are about living differently, dealing with yourself and other people and life in general in a different way.
