Sometimes: Zaneflex is indicated for muscle spasticity due to MS or spinal cord injuries. It has been found to help with dystonias (20%). The most commonly used muscle relaxant is baclofen. Side effects include sedation, infrequent tolerance, and dysphoria - depressive mood.

Yes: Muscle relaxers with central brain effects like tizanadine can be helpful. Other treatments include botulinum toxins by injection. See a physiatrist or neurlogist for eligibility.

If a person is diagnosed with primary dystonia but there is no family history, does that mean its not genetic?

No: Typically the word "primary" in reference to dystonias is used to talk about genetically-associated dystonias. Not having a known family history of the disease does not necessarily mean it is not genetic. Some of the dystonias that are genetic are passed down through carriers which can make them relatively rare, even among families of carriers.

My dystonia symptoms have been stable for five years. Should I expect them to remain the same, or will they progress and become more debilitating?

Probably stable: My experience has been that dystonia gets worse around puberty. Once you get past puberty the symptoms get stable or even improve. If you got through puberty you are probably safe.

Inflammation: Psoriasis is an inflammatory disorder. Inflammation can cause itching symptoms. Other than the prescribed topical steroids that reduce inflammation, i find that oral antihistamines such as zyrtec or Benadryl (diphenhydramine) help.

Sphincter tone: We have 2 sphincters that prevent stool from coming out. One is internal, the other is external. As long as one is working, stool should not come out. If you have had children, you could have damaged these sphincters. Diabetes, ms, infectious diarrhea can cause incontinence.
