Ovarian cysts: Surprisingly, most of the time when an ovarin cyst ruptures they is little consequence. There can be 1 or 2 days of discomfort. Sometimes, however, a cyst may bleed internally. Occasionally, i will need to operative on a patient with a bleeding cyst to relieve pain or stop the bleeding.

A 39-year-old member asked:
Can an ectopic pregnancy rupture lead to a hysterectomy?

Yes: An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy located outside the uterine cavity. If it's located in the cervix or in a portion of the fallopian tube close to the uterus, this can lead to excessive bleeding that can only be resolved with a hysterectomy. Although this is a rare event, it is still possible.

Very rare: It happens, but it is rare enough that it usually gets reported in the medical literature when it does. Splenic rupture with mononucleosis is more common.

A 30-year-old female asked:
I have bilateral ovarian cysts. With no fluid. What does this mean?

Just ovarian cysts: Every woman of reproductive age forms cysts during her cycles--the process of ovulation forms cysts. Often these resolve/shrink, but unfortunately some don't and may enlarge resulting the "ovarian cyst" many have them and may not have symptoms. Some people have large ones and may cause pain. Some twist on themselves and cause torsion. If you concerns, consult doc. Good luck.

With primary ovarian insufficiency and not taking hrt, is it possible for a woman to get an occasional period?

Kinda: If you have little to no estrogen from your ovaries you should not bleed at all. But if you have some in your diet or are overweight you may have bleeding so talk to your obgyn or endocrinologist.
