The usual dictum has been to remain on clear liquids the day before a colonoscopy exam. However, not uncommonly do we perform a colonoscopy on these patients and only find this out afterwards and usually the bowel preps are regarded as adequate.  Please discuss this issue with your performing colonoscopist before doing so however.

Generally most colon preps are made of water and a mix of salts to both replace those expected to be washed out by the prep, but also to make it "neutral", so your body chemistry will not change much with the large volumes of fluid ingested. Substances to change the taste are also generally used too, although most peolpe still say it tastes terrible :(.

Drink it a bit more slowly. Is he passing all liquid stool yet? If yes, he is on the right track since some liquid stool can be removed during the procedure. If he begins vomiting, call the GI doctor who is on call for further instruction-if his stool is all liquid, the doctor may advise stopping the prep. Best of luck to both of you!

Generally we advise patients not to drive or operate any heavy machinery until the following day after a colonoscopy, because the medicines used to sedate you can cause cloudy thinking and altered judgment.  There is no medical reason you couldn't go to a party if you are feeling up to it, but i would strongly suggest you go with a trusted friend who can drive you and stay with that friend for the duration of the party.  Let him/her know that your judgment may be impaired so he/she can "look out" for you.  I would suggest not drinking alcohol that night.

Drink it all to be sure the prep is good.  The worst would be to do "most" of the prep (which is absolutely no fun) but then get to the colonoscopy and it be inconclusive because it wasn't clear enough to see.  Then you're back at square one, starting over!  Good luck!  No one likes the stuff.

The procedure center will instruct you to not eat or drink from the night before, except for a galon of colon prep (golytely) solution used to clean the colon in preparation for the colonoscopy. You should have the information on proper prep.
