Hello, my name is Douglas Slaughter M.D. I am a practicing orthopaedic spine surgeon. I have been practicing spinal surgery since 2000. I have special interest in minimally invasive spine surgery as well as spinal surgery for conditions like adult scoliosis and kyphosis. As an undergraduate I majored in mechanical engineering and biochemistry. Therefore, spinal reconstruction is an extension of my mechanical engineering training with of course a medical focus. My interest in minimally invasive spinal surgery is an extension of the orthopaedic training I received as a resident. I think patients do much better when function can be restored with as minimal impact on our daily lives as possible. Arthroscopy returns patients to function with minimal impact on their function for the most part. In spine surgery, we use the scope in some areas but small incisions are the mainstay of minimally invasive spine surgery. I have functioned as faculty of many courses in which I taught other surgeons the techniques of minimally invasive spine surgery. I am consistently in pursuit of improved techniques to improve pain after surgery and overall patient outcomes.

A 27-year-old male asked:
Most pain resolves: The majority of back pain improves over time. You describe a fall which has most likely resulted in a contusion. Over the counter medication like Motrin or Aleve can be beneficial. Also using ice or heat may yield temporary relief as the body heals itself. It most often does not lead to a chronic pain issue.
A 44-year-old male asked:
Seek treatment: If you have had what sounds like mechanical back pain for 10 years, you should be seeking treatment from a professional. This can include physical therapist, chiropractor or your primary care physician. Treatments will likely begin with therapeutic exercise, modalities and possibly manipulation. Also some medications along with bracing may be added to decrease symptoms.
A 50-year-old male asked:
DO physicians: Spinal manipulation should only be performed by those trained in the techniques. This will limit your search to chiropractors, Osteopathic physicians who perform spinal manipulations (DO), and some physical therapists.
