Hello, my name is Douglas Slaughter M.D. I am a practicing orthopaedic spine surgeon. I have been practicing spinal surgery since 2000. I have special interest in minimally invasive spine surgery as well as spinal surgery for conditions like adult scoliosis and kyphosis. As an undergraduate I majored in mechanical engineering and biochemistry. Therefore, spinal reconstruction is an extension of my mechanical engineering training with of course a medical focus. My interest in minimally invasive spinal surgery is an extension of the orthopaedic training I received as a resident. I think patients do much better when function can be restored with as minimal impact on our daily lives as possible. Arthroscopy returns patients to function with minimal impact on their function for the most part.
In spine surgery, we use the scope in some areas but small incisions are the mainstay of minimally invasive spine surgery. I have functioned as faculty of many courses in which I taught other surgeons the techniques of minimally invasive spine surgery. I am consistently in pursuit of improved techniques to improve pain after surgery and overall patient outcomes.
