I an American medical graduate who has over 30 years of experience in primary care and emergency medicine. I practiced both Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine for over 20 years but now practice exclusively in the emergency field. Most of emergency care overlaps primary care and other specialties as we are frequently the first provider to see, diagnose and treat common and uncommon disease and injury states. Emergency Physicians are highly capable of determining when a life threatening illness is present and when immediate intervention is or is not needed.
My approach to medical care is first to find out what the patients symptoms are and then to directly ask what their concerns are so I can focus the care to get the best results and answers to the patient. This direct approach also involves asking what the patient expects will be the result of the encounter to be. If possible and indicated I strive for the same outcome. If my training and expertise lead me to a different result then a detailed and understandable explanation is owed to the patient or support providers.
I believe that patient autonomy is best accomplished by understanding which comes from clear and understandable communication. In the information age physicians must become interpreters to the large amounts and frequently confusing medical information available.
Let me be your guide. Together we can evaluate your signs and symptoms of illness or discuss options for health promotion and come up with a plan to reach your goals of diagnosis, recovery and health.
