My goal is to offer tailored medical knowledge to individuals. On-line consults limited to current patients.
Those who know me know that I consider medical knowledge "open source" and want all patients to understand their health issues. Thus, education, understanding and application are paramount. There are no secrets in medicine, only knowledge and the knowledge of how to use that knowledge. It seems that it should be easy to take care of ourselves, but it is still difficult. There are many barriers. Stress, fear, time constraints, financial limitations and simple human denial/wishful thinking and innate hungers can get in the way of each of our commitments to our own health. I like to illustrate our human predicament as that of a passenger in a car with a reckless driver trying to influence that reckless driver from the back seat. If the driver has bad driving behavior, the automobile may not last the expected "life" of the average vehicle. It may be damaged or prematurely sent to the junk yard. Yet, that is often what it is like to be human. The driver of our body is the brain. The brain has wants, desires and illusions that we have to control to keep our selves on the road and away from the potholes, telephone poles and cliffs. Urges to eat, not exercise, ignore health concerns and "someday get to that" are all driver behavior. The intellect in the back seat has a heck of a time trying to coax the driver into submission! Getting on and staying on a healthy course is hard work, but possible. It takes knowledge, practice and guidance/coaching. The best coach is one who has either mastered this or helped many others master their own behaviors. I have done both. I have been in practice for 20 years, helping others and I practice what I preach. I am always coaching my patients to do the same. Almost none of us have perfect health, but with a good history, exam and plan, all of us can learn to do the best with what we have!
