Many Reasons: 1. Nerve dies. 2. Irreversible infection in nerve, nerve is dying. 3. Insufficient tooth structure to properly restore without placing a post inside the tooth to retain the build-up, which is what keeps a crown on a tooth. 4. A tooth is super-erupted and the patient would like to keep the tooth, a root canal may be necessary to bring that tooth back into the occlusal plane.
