About

Bio

Dr. Werthman is a fellowship-trained andrologist, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Diplomate of the American Board of Urology and Director of the Center for Male Reproductive Medicine in Century City, Los Angeles. He is the past President of the Los Angeles Urologic Society and has served as former Chief of Urology at Century City Hospital, and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Urology at The University of Southern California School of Medicine. As a male infertility specialist, Dr. Werthman has a keen understanding and perspective of the unique issues that confront men who are faced with this unfamiliar and unsettling situation. Dr. Philip Werthman’s practice is limited exclusively to microsurgical vasectomy reversal, no-scalpel vasectomy and the treatment of male infertility. He has performed thousands of microsurgical procedures and well over 2000 no-scalpel vasectomies. He believes that medicine and surgery should be practiced the “old-fashioned” way by giving personal, individualized attention to each couple and spending as much time as needed educating patients as to all the possible options, procedures, alternatives and risks regarding a vasectomy reversal and other methods of conception.

Specialties
Doctors may have more than one area of specialty interest. Board certification in a specialty area means the doctor has completed formal training and has practice experience in that specialty, and has passed the certification examination from the corresponding accredited medical specialty board.

A 40-year-old member asked:

Yes: A hydrocele can be corrected through a minor outpatient surgical procedure. The condition is the result of fluid getting trapped in the space between the testicle and the membrane that surrounds it. The corrective procedure drains the fluid and obliterates the membrane so more fluid can't re-accumulate.
A 39-year-old female asked:

It won't...: Scar tissue doesn't clear up. Hopefully you're referring to swelling after surgery. If a vasovasostomy type of reconnection was performed then it could take anywhere from 1-6mos for the vas to open up. If a vasoepididymostomy was performed then it can easily take 6mos-1yr or longer for the connection to open up. Check w/your doctor to see what ; how it was done ; his expectations.
A 38-year-old female asked:
Dr. Philip Werthman
Urology 31 years experience
It depends...: It depends if ; why it’s low. In the healing phase(approx 6mos) counts can be low, sometimes because the channel that was reconnected is not fully open. Some drs have patients wait 6mos to see what the sperm count looks like at that time while others put patients on anti-inflammatory meds. Sperm counts can also be low due to a production problem. A physical exam/hormone profile can dertermine this.
