Dr. James Bicos
Dr. Bicos is a fellowship trained Orthopedic Sports Medicine surgeon who specializes in taking care of athletes of all ages. Whether you are a weekend warrior or on our Olympic team, he customizes his treatment to help YOU recover and get back to YOUR lifestyle.Dr. Bicos did his undergraduate training at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL in Biomedical Engineering. His thesis at that time was designing knee replacement instrumentation based on sound engineering principles. He then did his medical school training at Rush Medical College, Chicago, IL. He stayed at Rush Presbyterian St. Lukes Medical Center and finished their esteemed Orthopedic Residency Program. From there he did his sports medicine fellowship at the University of Connecticut. During his fellowship year, he helped cover the Hartford Wolfpack, which is the NHL feeder team for the New York Rangers.Currently, Dr. Bicos practices at Performance Orthopedics, just outside of Detroit, Michigan. He is on staff with the Orthopedic Residency Program at the Department of Orthopedics at William Beaumont Hospital, in Royal Oak, Michigan. He is also part of William Beaumont Sports Medicine.Dr. Bicos has extensive sports medicine training and experience. He is currently the USA Gymnastics National Team Orthopedic Surgeon. He has been the lead team physician for them at two World Championships and 2011 Pan American Games. He has also consulted for USA Diving, USA Synchro, and USA Track and Field. More recently he was named to the Top 10 List of Orthopedic Sports Medicine Surgeons for 2012 by Sports Illustrated!Locally, he covers the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies, which is a Division I collegiate sports program, and Groves High School, which is part of the Birmingham School District.Dr. Bicos specializes in comprehensive shoulder issues including: shoulder arthroscopy, rotator cuff repairs, labral repairs, SLAP repairs, Bankart repairs, shoulder dislocations/instability, biceps tendon issues, shoulder fractures, shoulder arthritis, shoulder replacements, total shoulder replacements, Reverse shoulder replacements, and revision shoulder replacement. He also specializes in sports related knee injuries including: ACL, PCL, MCL, PLC tears, multiligament tears, meniscal tears, meniscal transplantation, cartilage restoration (ACI, DeNovo, OATS, Carticel), patellofemoral pain/dislocations (i.e. kneecap dislocations), Fulkerson osteotomies, MPFL reconstructions, and High Tibial Osteotomies. Dr. Bicos also sees hip labral tears.
