About

Bio

I obtained my undergraduate degree from Texas Tech. My medical school training was in San Antonio at the University of Texas HSC. I then completed my General Surgical residency at Parkland Hospital and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Dallas. I was in private practice for several years before joining Scott and White Healthcare in Round Rock, Texas. My surgical practice centers primarily around the treatment of breast and thyroid disease including benign and malignant conditions.

Fiber/stool softners: These are typically caused by straining with bowel movements.Increasing dietary fiber will help with softening the stools. If you can't achieve this with fiber alone, you can add a stool softener/laxative like miralax (polyethylene glycol). You want soft stools that occur w/o straining. If you have rectal bleeding you need to visit your doctor to make sure this is the correct diagnosis. An office procedure can help too.

Miralax (polyethylene glycol) works well.: The usual dose is 17 grams (about 1 heaping tablespoon) of powder/day (or as directed by physician) in 4 to 8 ounces of water or other beverage. Each bottle has a measuring cap marked to contain 17 grams of the powder when filled to the indicated line. 1-3 days may be required to produce a bowel movement. You are trying for soft but not loose stools with no straining. 2-3 doses/week may be enough.

A few possibilities.: Given your age and history you need a physical exam and imaging of your breast. While this is most likely benign, you want to be assured this is not something more serious. A simple exam with a mammogram and likley ultrasound should easily confirm the diagnosis.
