Dr. Chynn is one of the most famous, experienced LASEK surgeons in the US. He was the 1st LASIK surgeon in NYC to get LASIK himself, back in 1999 for high myopia and high astigmatism. Although he's happy with his result, he suffers from dry eyes and glare at night, which is common after LASIK, and is caused by the flap being cut, which cuts the corneal nerves and causes dry eyes, and results in a permanent 2-piece cornea. which causes night glare.LASEK was invented when Dr. Chynn was at Harvard by 2 of his collaborators, who he subsequently published research with. Dr. Chynn was unhappy with the discomfort and prolonged healing after LASEK, so performed 5,000 LASIKs over 5 years from 2000-2005In 2005 he updated and advanced the LASEK procedure and invented SafeSight, a better way to perform LASEK that is still 10x safer than LASIK (because it's non-cutting), but without any pain or prolonged healing. In 2007 he stopped doing LASIK altogether, and also stopped doing IntraLase, as both those cutting procedures can have many complications that you cannot get if you avoid the cutting stepIn 2008 he purchased an epikeratome, and introduced epiLASEK to NYC. Park Avenue LASEK is still the only center in NYC performing epiLASEK, which is absolutely the most advanced form of the noncutting, noninvasive, surface ablation procedure.Every LASIK surgeon in the US is forced to avoid LASIK and go to a noncutting procedure if it's too risky to perform LASIK, like with thin corneas, high prescriptions, irregular astigmatism, and prior incisional surgery like RK or AK. Most of the time, they go back to PRK, which is the original, 30-year old noncutting procedure (Dr. Chynn performed his last PRK in 1998).However, Park Avenue LASEK ONLY preforms noncutting LASEK and epiLASEK 100% of the time.
