A 28-year-old female asked:

Night chest pain: The pattern of your symptoms suggests a diagnosis of GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease). The culprit is a weak sphincter muscle located just above the stomach which is not sealing the esophagus completely from stomach acid. This is worse when lying on your back, and when the stomach is full. Try NO Oral intake 3 hours before bedtime, sleep propped up, take antacids and acid blocker meds.

Abnormal "growth": It is completely ABNORMAL for an adult to "grow" in height. This could be a serious sign of a pituitary gland (located in your brain) tumor secreting TOO MUCH growth hormone (HGH). If your doctor has not considered this, consult an ENDOCRINOLOGIST who specializes in these disorders. You may need lab tests to check the hormone levels and a CT scan of your brain to evaluate your pituitary gland.

Swallowing problems: Swallowing without choking is a complex act requiring the coordination of many muscles. Liquids can sneak past the seal muscles need to make to prevent passages of liquids into the air tube (trachea) instead of the food tube (esophagus). When muscles are weak (due to a stroke) liquids in the trachea cause choking. Xanthan gum is the thickening agent.
