Big veins in stomach
Blood from all intestines including the stomach and esophagus drain through the liver before going through the heart through the portal system. If you have chronic liver disease, this portal system can get backed up, and the result will be engorged or enlarged veins in the esophagus or stomach, called varices.
These engorged veins can bleed very easily leading to hematemesis.
