Symptoms, ultrasound: Adenomyosis is endometriosis in the wall of the uterus. It can make the uterus enlarged, tender and cause heavy, painful periods as well as painful sex. It can be diagnosed based on symptoms, pelvic examination where the uterus where typically will be globular and tender, and pelvic ultrasound where the uterine wall may appear thick and have cysts. Ir can also be diagnosed on path exam of a uterus.

Very similar: Adenomyosis is endometriosis in the wall of the uterus, and many patients will have both. It can make the uterus enlarged, tender and cause heavy, painful periods as well as painful sex. Like endometriosis, the symptoms can often be controlled with hormonal therapy, but the condition remains. Symptoms that do not respond to medical management may require surgery.

Pain, heavy periods: Adenomyosis is endometriosis in the wall of the uterus. It can make the uterus enlarged, tender and cause heavy, painful periods as well as painful sex. The symptoms can often be controlled with birth control pills, a Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud, or an endometrial ablation; but the condition remains. The only "cure" is to remove the uterus.
