Dr. Proffitt was born in Illinois. His undergraduate degree was in physiology from Southern Illinois University. He went to medical school at the University of Illinois. After medical school he performed his 5 years of General Surgery tranining at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. He then completed a year-long Endovascular Surgery Fellowship in Lubbock under Dr. Michael Silva, Jr., the future head of Vascular Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. Following this he did an additional year of Vascular Fellowship at the University of Maryland.
Since graduating from his fellowships, he set up private practice in the north Dallas area. Shortly afterwards, he became the Medical Director of the Baylor Medical Center at Garland Chronic Wound Care Clinic.
