Dr. Jonathan Cheng is a trained radiation oncologist with broad clinical experience in treating cancers of the prostate, breast, lung, central nervous system, gastrointestinal system, gynecologic system, and head and neck region. Dr. Cheng has developed expertise in many of the most advanced technologies in the field of radiation oncology, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), high-dose-rate (HDR) temporary interstitial/intracavitary brachytherapy, permanent seed prostate brachytherapy, and MammoSite Breast ®Brachytherapy.
Dr. Cheng received his undergraduate education in Biochemistry at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa and with Departmental Highest Honors. He earned the prominent distinction of a Regents Scholar, and was awarded Schenck Memorial Scholarship and Naumberg Research Award. He then attended medical school at the Keck School of Medicine at University of Southern California (USC), where he received his M.D. and Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Among his numerous accomplishments, he was awarded the Honorary Graduate Student Award and Western Forum Medical Student Research Fellowships, as well as induction into the Senior Alpha Omega Alpha Society. In addition to writing several book chapters, he had also published numerous manuscripts in world-renowned academic journals, including Cancer Cell, Molecular Cell Biology and Journal of National Cancer Institute. He completed an internship in internal medicine at UCLA Olive View Medical Center in Sylmar, CA. Following this, Dr. Cheng completed his residency training in Radiation Oncology at the University of California Irvine Medical Center, City of Hope National Medical Center, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and Long Beach VA Healthcare System. During his training, Dr. Cheng served as Chief Resident and gained expertise in treating the full spectrum of tumors utilizing a wide array of advanced treatment technologies, including Varian RapidArc, TomoTherapy, and CyberKnife. In addition, he has extensive training in the treatment of prostate, breast (Mammosite), and gynecological cancers with HDR brachytherapy.
Dr. Cheng has been actively involved in numerous research projects throughout his career. His research interests include IGRT, IMRT, SRS, SBRT, RapidArc, TomoTherapy, and brachytherapy. Dr. Cheng has presented several of his original research at regional and national meetings of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), American Radium Society (ARS), and American Association of Cancer Research (AACR). He was also a co-investigator for an institutional prospective clinical trial in Radiation Oncology at City of Hope National Medical Center. For his research achievements, he was awarded the prestigious Roentgen Research Award by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).
As a Radiation Oncologist with Greater Houston Radiation Oncology Group, Dr. Cheng is dedicated to providing cutting-edge technical expertise and knowledge, along with a compassionate and humanistic side in treating patients with cancer. His primary practice location is at the Precision Radiotherapy Center in southeast Houston.
He is an active member of Texas Medical Association (TMA), American Medical Association (AMA), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASC0), ASTRO, ARS, RSNA, American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO), and American Brachytherapy Society (ABS).
