Mole causes: Nevi or "moles" are caused by abnormal proliferation of skin cells. This is technically a neoplasm, but is of the benign variety. Most appear in the first thirty years of life and can have a hereditary component.

Biopsy!: The only way to know for certain whether a mole is malignant is a tissue specimen sent to the pathologist for microscopic evaluation. This is the definitive answer for any concern regarding a pigmented or non-pigmented lesion that may be regarded as a "mole".
A 32-year-old male asked:

Symptoms...: Moles are typically asymptomatic and painless. They can become entangled by necklaces, cut by your razor when shaving, and abraded by clothing. Mechanical trauma can cause bleeding. Persistent bleeding, itching, or pain is a danger sign and should be investigated.
