Check with your OB!: There are several potential sources for spotting in the third trimester. In some pregnancies, small blood vessels on the cervix surface maybe vulnerable to a small amount of bleeding without harm. Examination of the cervix, ultrasound of the placenta and fetal growth, and blood pressure checks by your obstetrician should determine if there is a need to pursue further studies.

Obtain consultation: Bright areas in certain areas of the heart may be reflections of ultrasound waves from valves. The most common finding is the echogenic intracardiac focus noted in 1-4% of fetuses, but not associated with heart abnormalities or other disorders. Rarely, "calcium" may be noted in the fetus, and may represent effects of a viral illness. Confer with your maternal fetal medicine md about this.

Unlikely, but...: CMV infections are often asymptomatic in mothers and if acquired for the first time early in pregnancy, may in some cases lead to serious newborn effects. The majority of children of CMV + moms will be asymptomatic or unaffected, but about 10% will have a certain tye of hearing loss, dental problems and/or temporary infalmmation of the eye. If you have acute CMV during pregnancy, confer with a maternal fetal medicine specialist about potential interventions to protect the unborn baby.
