If the usual rice treatments (rest, ice, compression, elevation) do not improve your elbow pain after a few days, or if swelling and/or bruising is prominent, then you should see a physician for further clinical and possibly radiographic evaluation.
Depending on the mechanism of injury, a sprain (ligament injury), strain (muscle injury) or fracture (bone injury) may be present.
