About

Bio

Dr.Melgarejo has had a fascination for infectious diseases since early in his career. During his school years, he used to read about "viral exanthems" that were common in his native country of Colombia (such as measles, rubella, etc.). During medical school, Dr. Melgarejo volunteered in a virology research lab at the National Institutes of Health in Colombia, where he worked on epidemiologic surveillance of polyomyelitis. He then moved to the United States to pursue his Graduate Medical Education, first a residency in Internal Medicine and then a fellowship in Infectious Diseases. He trained in Houston, a large urban area with a very diverse population that provided him the chance to train in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide array of infectious diseases. His research work has been focused on infectious diarrhea, particularly in Clostridium difficile and Escherichia coli (enteroaggregative).
