About
Bio
Pediatric Pain Management is a young field. Before 1980 there was little literature on even post surgical pediatric pain management, let alone chronic pain in children. The first academic outpatient pediatric pain clinics started in the 90's and to this day exist only associated with pediatric institutions. Dr. Michael Joseph MD is a board certified pediatrician who was trained in that system. Dr. Joseph has dedicated his career to the care for children and young adults with chronic pain. He is responsible for creating two pain clinics at major children's hospitals and is one of only a handful of pediatrician pain specialists in the country.
After graduating Cum Laude from Creighton University School of Medicine and at the top of his residency at the University of California at Irvine Medical Center, Dr. Joseph started his Pediatric Pain Management career at UCLA Medical Center under the direction of Dr. Lonnie Zeltzer. Dr. Zeltzer is responsible for demonstrating the power of the multidisciplinary approach in pediatric pain management and one of the leaders in the field. After leaving UCLA Dr. Joseph created a flourishing outpatient pain clinic at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. For the six years he was at CHLA he cared for hundreds of children suffering from chronic pain. Most recently Dr. Joseph had the opportunity to create a clinic for Nationwide Children's Hospital. Dr Joseph's research interests involve the application of complementary therapies for the treatment of chronic pain and the study of measurable clinical outcomes for these patients.
