Tetanus shot how long after puncture can one wait?

Tetanus shot how long after puncture can one wait?

Not long.: Tetanus vaccines prevent "lockjaw", a disease of horrible muscle spasms that is generally fatal. If you have already been properly vaccinated within the last 10 years, then you are probably protected unless the puncture wound is profoundly contaminated--prompting a need for a booster vaccine in 5 years. The symptoms of tetanus can occur as quickly as 3 days, although the average is 8 days. ...Read more

Got cut with a dirty blade desinfected with KMnO4.No local signs of inflamation. Last date of tetanus shot 17.11.2005. Shoul get tetanus shot again ?

Yes: Since it has been more than 5 years since your last booster, you should get one even though there are no signs of infection/inflammation. Make sure that you get a Tdap, as we now know you need pertussis boost as well and you would not have gotten that back in 2005. ...Read more

Need more info: But immed after wound, trauma has occurred, tissue has also been burned. This starts a series of processes in motion. Notably trauma damaged and destroyed nerves, inflammation from injury and burn, blood loss which could effect sensation. In long run the the first two likely play a role, after inflammation subsides some sensation may return, some nerve function may regenerate. ...Read more

I got a tetanus shot a week after a dog bite. My last tetanus shot was well over ten years ago. Is this tetanus shot too late to take effect?

I got a tetanus shot a week after a dog bite. My last tetanus shot was well over ten years ago. Is this tetanus shot too late to take effect?

No: the Tetanus shot you received wasn't meant to treat the dog bite, rather to catch up on your late immunization schedule. If your doctor was suspicious of tetanus infection, yes s/he would have given you Tetanus immune globulin, which gives best results if given within the first 24 hrs, all the best ...Read more

Will tetnus shot after 15 hours of animal bite still prevent infection?

Will tetnus shot after 15 hours of animal bite still prevent infection?

Yes, but...: A tetanus shot prevents only the bad effects of a tetanus infection. The shot does not prevent an infection from the other bacteria that animals carry in their mouths. Thus, if an animal bites through one's skin, a doctor can evaluate to see what treatment may be needed. Be sure the animal is one who does not, or is not likely, to carry rabies (because rabies is fatal). ...Read more

After a dog bite I get a tetanus vacine (0.5 toxoid) after 48 hours . I had receives the same vacine twice in last three months. Will I get tetanus?

No: The repeated dosing is not harmful but is likely not a significant benefit. You get about 10 years of protection from a booster and the earlier dose would have covered the new bite. People get tetanus if they have no protection and the tetanus germ produces an infection in your skin and generates tetanus toxin.A good wound cleaning ant the shot protects you. ...Read more

When I should repeat inj tetanus toxoid ?

When I should repeat inj tetanus toxoid ?

Protection wears off: The protection provided by a tetanus shot usually provides ample levels of circulating antibody protection for up to ten years. After that point it fades & the person may develop tetanus if exposed. Protection from tetanus & several other bacteria based vaccines does not last as long as most viral vaccines & must be boosted periodically to maintain protection. ...Read more

Is tDap a tetanus shot? I got a Tdap shot 5years ago,And previous boosters before that (I'm 22) I cut myself with a rusty nail 3days ago.Am I covered?

You're Covered, Dude: Tdap 5yrs ago is fine and should last 10 unless you get a so-called tetanus-prone wound (crush injury, contaminated injury, puncture wound, etc), then at 5 years is the time to get the booster. A rusty nail isn't too much to worry about. It's what might be on that nail that could cause tetanus (spores from the soil) or infection (bacteria from soil or your shoe if it penetrated into your foot). ...Read more
