What are the symptoms of a meniscus tear? What does it mean when a MRI says a displacement at the meniscus root? Does that cause a knee to lock?
Giving way: Meniscal tears usually cause mechanical instability. The primary symptom is buckling or giving out. A displaced meniscus can cause the knee to lock. The meniscal root is where it attaches either in the front or back of the knee. Depending on your age it can be repaired or removed but is almost always a surgical treatment. See a good orthopedic surgeon. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Some activity: You do not have to have a specific injury to cause a meniscal tear. Pain meds, injection: The last treatment before knee replacement includes injections of cortisone or lubricants (synvisc, supartz, (hyaluronic acid) etc). Weight loss, stretching and muscle strengthening help also. Anti-inflammatory meds and other pain meds also block the pain. Unfortunately, all of these are temporary. For some young patients, osteotomy (realignment of the limb) or partial knee replacement may be indicated. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

I had my outer meniscus tear repaired and now the inside of my knee kills when i try to run. Why is that?
Ortho evaluation now: A thorough examination by your treating surgeon or another orthopaedic surgeon should ascertain the more likely causes of your new onset medial knee pain. An MRI may be indicated to evaluate the status of the repaired lateral meniscus and to gain better detail regarding the internal derangement now potentially present within the medial aspect of your knee. Cartilage or meniscus injury are likely. ...Read more
Does twisting your knee to the left or right with pain indicate a medial meniscus tear? If i move my knee that way the pain is unbearable
Sounds like tear: What you are describing in orthopedics is called the apley's test and is characteristic of a meniscus tear. Similar pain can occur if you have some arthritis in this compartment of the joint. Agree that you should see an orthopedic surgeon particularly if catching, swelling and/or giving way is occurring. They will consider an MRI to better define the pathology. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
In December I had a medial meniscus tear. After I straighten my knee after its bent for a while there's stiff pain on the lateral side as well.
Workout as tolerated: Not all meniscal tears are the same. Unstable tears will cause pain when provoked by activities such as running, cutting, and pivoting (changing direction rapidly). Unless surgery is indicated, you should be able to slowly advance as tolerated with your normal workouts. Avoidance of high impact aerobic activities, running, jumping and deep knee bending is often recommended initially. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Turning, twisting...: turning, twisting , squatting maneuvers are common mechanisms of injury for meniscus tears. As we age the meniscus can become more ' brittle' as it loses its water content and ' degenerative' tears are quite common w/ getting in/ out of a a car and other simple mechanisms.Sounds like you have a valgus( 'knock- kneed')knee and is a normal 'variant', esp.in women.Best of Luck! ...Read more
