Can a dexamethasone injection in the gluteus muscle for rotator cuff injury make shoulder pain worse?

Can a dexamethasone injection in the gluteus muscle for rotator cuff injury make shoulder pain worse?

Gluteal injection: I have heard this scenario from patients multiple times and I must admit - I don't understand the rationale of the treatment. If your MD/DO wishes to treat your injury with "systemic" steroids - meaning it goes all around your body it should be done with pills - a medrol pak. An injection into the muscle typically stays right where you put it - the muscle . So the injection did not make it worse ...Read more

Symptoms: acute and now constant shoulder pain which lead to swelling in my hand, discolouration and weakness. Could this be a rotator cuff injury?

Maybe: The description of your symptoms is not a common presentation for a rotator cuff problem. The first thing that comes to my mind with this description is a vascular issue. I think of things like upper extremity deep venous thrombosis and thoracic outlet syndrome. I would have this issue evaluated by a primary care provider soon. ...Read more

I : I agree with dr. Peterson. Depending on type of rotator cuff tear, physical therapy is often an excellent option. By maximizing the muscle strength of the surrounding the other rotator cuff muscles and surrounding shoulder blade muscles, the pain associated with the tear and subsequent dysfunction may be controlled. For those who do not have success with physical therapy, surgery may improve their results. Physical therapy seems to do a little better in the degenerative type tears or the partial thickness rotator cuff tears. Usually, large full thickness rotator cuff tears tend to require surgical repair. ...Read more
