Better check that: Sounds like your eardrum is not making a seal; 10 yrs is a long time. Also, your eustachian tube is not offering much resistance; you might just introduce bacteria into the middle ear - leading to an ear infection. Try not to do that often. Also an examination by an otolaryngologist will determine if you have fluid behind the ear drum that is contributing to your problem. Poss. Canal scratch: The first question is are you on a blood thinner such as Plavix (clopidogrel) or aspirin? These things happen with scratching of the ear canal with your finger in the middle of the night. If the doctor could see nothing usually means the tympanic membrane is normal but the canal could have a small scratch. If it continues stop the aspirin etc for a few days and see an ear specialist. This small communication allowing inner ear fluid (perilymph) into the middle ear can cause, vertigo and hearing loss.
