Cannot say: without directly examining. Pain makes for easy answers on examination if a spot is tender on poking it, that's the cause! Limping tends to jar back and produce muscle irritation and spasm. Aspirin like drugs, warmth, rest, massage are some of many many treatments. ...Read more

What can cause severe breathtaking pain in my ribs&through to my upper back on&off for 1 yr. Very sudden, then it eases away. I'm a smoker of 4 yrs.

Warning: This is the problem with the gamble of smoking. It causes irritation by chemically burning the lung tissue requiring healing and scarring, thus shortening breath with emphysema. It sets up bone & nerve pain all over the body. It lowers ability to destroy cancer cells and stimulates cancer development in every organ, not just lungs. Advise stopping, but get check by doc. ...Read more

How risky is for a 72 year old female have back surgery to align 2 vertrebass out of place are pinching nerves causing severe back pain and leg crams?

Depends : The surgery that you describe in general is a big surgery that sounds like it would involve a fusion and spinal instrumentation. That being said, these are surgeries that are done frequently with good results. The things that make these surgeries risky are concurrent medical issues:heart problems, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis etc. The risk is also decreased with the experience of the surgeon. ...Read more

Could weak back muscles cause bad posture therefore cause pain in hip to foot to a 74 yr old woman. She suffers from ostioartrithis in lower back too.

Various causes: The back pain could be coming from several areas. Bad posture could contribute to it, or could be the result of it. If she has arthritis in the lower back, she may also have narrowing of the foramen, resulting in a pinched nerve and pain down the leg. Or it could be originating from a disc. Other possibilities include leg length discrepancy from poor posture. See a physiatrist. ...Read more

I have chronic compression fractures in L2 and T2. No trauma to my back but had celestone injections age 6-11 now 58. Could this be the cause for pain?

I have chronic compression fractures in L2 and T2. No trauma to my back but had celestone injections age 6-11 now 58. Could this be the cause for pain?

Not typically: The term chronic refers to the idea that the fractures are old and therefore healed. Unless they healed in a highly collapsed manner, most healed compression fractures do not cause pain. Similarly, steroid injections in and of themselves do not cause pain. Degenerative disc disease, facet arthropathy, and SI problems are just three examples of more common causes. Be seen for correct diagnosis. ...Read more

Have severe low back pain that happens a couple times a year. Could the epidural I had from.my c-section 10 years ago be the cause of the pain?

Unlikely, chance smal: Epidurals can be a way to minimize delivery pain and also sciatica or radiating pain. So chances are small that the epidural is a cause. However, see a spine specialist or PMR doctor for a full evaluation which is likely to include a MRI and Physical Therapy. Many people develop back pain over time and good imaging and core strengthening respectively, can evaluate & treat most causes effectively. ...Read more

Major back pain caused by horrible car accident, 32 weeks pregnant, is there anything i can do? Pain is unbearable at times.

PMR: I would recommend conservative care initially, either a physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor (pm;r) who can do gentle strretching and adjustments such as sacroiliac joint mobilization. Aquatic therapy /decompression may also help. If the pain radiates down the leg , you may need to see a pain mangement specialist, who can perform an injection without xray if a herniated disc is suspected. ...Read more
