Can a neck injury stunt the growth of a fourteen year old?

Can a neck injury stunt the growth of a fourteen year old?

No: Teen growth occurs from the long bones rather than the spine. The growth plates in the legs close on average starting at age 15 and ending at age 20. Unless the neck injury involves more than the bones in the neck, it should have no effect on when the other growth plates close. (certain medications used to treat injuries, may cause premature closure, though.). ...Read more

What could cause a spiral fracture in the femur of a 5 week old infant?

What could cause a spiral fracture in the femur of a 5 week old infant?

Abuse or defect: My top thought would be the twisting action of a grumpy parent trying to change a diaper in a crying infant. There are some rare metabolic disorders that would make the bones weak, and accidental injury more possible. However, I would place abuse, even by accident, at the top of my list, and pursue a full family evaluation. Many larger hospitals have a team that works thru this issue. ...Read more

What causes spontaneous growth spurts in adults? Same height for yrs then out of blue had a growth spurt around 38 another @ 41adding inches to height

Endocrine Disorder: Spontaneous growth spurts in adults is abnormal. Normal human growth ceases by the time we reach 18-20 yo, when the growth plate in our long bones close. Growth is hormonally regulated via pituitary-mediated secretion of growth hormone, GH. Excess GH is concerning for an endocrine disorder, such as a pituitary tumor. Can a spiral fracture in the humerus near the elbow happen in a 4 month old when the arm is grabbed by an adult man to keep the child from falling?

Can a spiral fracture in the humerus near the elbow happen in a 4 month old when the arm is grabbed by an adult man to keep the child from falling?

I wouldn't buy that: You don't grab an arm or elbow on a 4mo to stop a fall, you grab their body. Spiral fractures result from a twisting motion. While it might be possible in theory, the kid deserves a full body scan for other injuries and the family should be evaluated by social service for stressors. I would hospitalize such a kid for safety until a full evaluation was completed, using a court order if required. ...Read more

Can I have a wrist X-ray at the age of 17 after puberty for height growth ?

Can I have a wrist X-ray at the age of 17 after puberty for height growth ?

You can but...: If you can find a doctor willing to order this you can but there is little point in doing so. Girls stop growing 2-3 years after their periods start; this is when the growth plates close. After this further growth is impossible. If it's been 3 years or more since puberty the x-ray will undoubtedly show that your growth plates are closed. You need to accept that you have reached full height. Sorry! ...Read more

How probable is a 2 year old to fracture his skull in a short fall?

What other than a pituitary tumor could cause a noticeable height increase in adults? I noticed a growth spurt around age 38 & then another at 41.

What other than a pituitary tumor could cause a noticeable height increase in adults? I noticed a growth spurt around age 38 & then another at 41.

Doesn't actually...: Height growth due to increased growth hormone does not happen in adults because their growth plates in their long bones have fused. That means any perceived increase in height would not be related to any presumed or actual pituitary tumor in an adult over age 25 or so. ...Read more
