My grandmother of age 70 got cardiac arrest and hypoxic brain injury occured. How long it will take to recover?

Well : The majority of the recovery occurs the first three or four days. Then there can be some slow recovery of brain function. You really need to ask your neurologist or intensive care doctor what they think the prognosis is and what progress she's making ...Read more

Brain Damage (Definition)

Anything that disrupts tissue integrity can cause brain damage: lack of or reduced oxygen (stroke), viamin deficiency, pressure (hydrocephalus, or, bleeding or tumor inside the skull), blunt or penetrating trauma; infection; inflammation (immune system mediated or otherwise); toxins (alcohol, ecstasy, lead, mercury, arsenic, to name but a few); diseases (ms, diabetes, ...Read more

How much time can a person be in cardiac arrest and survive with little to no brain damage when they are in icy?

How much time can a person be in cardiac arrest and survive with little to no brain damage when they are in icy?

Varies: Less than 5 minutes is the normal temperature answer. There have been anecdotal events of people that have been hours in icy water that regain consciousness with no brain damage, it is thought to be due to a decrease in metabolism. No real time known due to the fact that we can't really experiment to find out, and we only see it when it happens in real life. Not so common. ...Read more

My mom went in2 cardiac arrest & brought back but on life support -before her brain died completely could she hear me telling her I love her please?

My mom went in2 cardiac arrest & brought back but on life support -before her brain died completely could she hear me telling her I love her please?

Yes: It is likely that she heard you. I guess it was her time. I tell the loved ones and staff that are within earshot of my patients who are in a coma, to assume that everything they say can be heard and understood. If they cannot hear then nothing is lost through such acts of kindness. ...Read more

Please tell me, could brain rumors cause cardiac arrest?

Brain rumors?: I imagine you meant to write brain "tumors". A brain tumor wouldn't directly cause a heart attack, but a person with a brain tumor could certainly have a cardiac arrest, especially related to surgery or other treatment complication. ...Read more

Can the brain regenrate after cardiac arrest after 30min.?

Can the brain regenrate after cardiac arrest after 30min.?

Generally not: It depends on the specific situation, but if the brain has been deprived of oxygen for more than 12 to 14 minutes, the damage is (usually) at least partly irreversible. A relatively new technique called therapeutic hypothermia improves the statistics somewhat, but the outcomes for many patients are still poor. ...Read more

Cardiac arrest related to brain inflammation?

Cardiac arrest related to brain inflammation?

Cause of death: Brain swelling (edema) will eventually cause the brain to herniate through one of the layers of protective scaffolding. This usually leads to wild fluctuations in blood pressure and rapidly to respiratory and cardiac arrest. However, the cause of death is the cause of the brian edema, not the cardiac arrest. ...Read more

Cardiac arrest and brain inflammation, how are these related?

Cardiac arrest and brain inflammation, how are these related?

Hypoxia related: It is believed that during cardiac arrest and during all the efforts to save a person, there is hypoxia to the brain and this causes inflammation. There are also the release of hormones during the stress causing the inflammation. In some facilities where it is available, head trauma and cardiac arrest are treated with hypothermia to decrease and calm inflammation and decrease o2 need. ...Read more

When someone goes in 2 complete cardiac arrest . No pulse heaetbeat . How many min would it take without oxyegen to b brain dead ?

When someone goes in 2 complete cardiac arrest . No pulse heaetbeat . How many min would it take without oxyegen to b brain dead ?

Not long: Survival from cardiac arrest is determined by many things, and time is certainly an important one. However, how well the body is oxygenated and perfused during the arrest (say, by cpr) as well as body temperature all play a role. In your question, you imply there is no oxygen - so the answer is mere minutes. ...Read more

Can you tell me what to expect with someone who has had a family member die of brain death/cardiac arrest?

WHEN I HAVE PANIC ATTACK MY HEARTBEAT IS OVER 250, I AM FEEL LIKE I AM LOSING MY MIND. MY QUESTION IS CAN PANIC ATTACK CAUSE CARDIAC ARREST??

Panic attacks: As a psychologist, I have seen hundreds of people with panic attacks who have no cardiac issues. Therefore, I would generally say that panic attacks do not cause cardiac arrest. However, if someone has an undiagnosed underlying heart problem panic attacks could be harmful. I would suggest speaking to your internist and have a complete cardiac workup. ...Read more

My mother has fdiffuse Cerebral Edema Because of Cardiac arrest. She is Having Little Body Movements, Little Eye Opening but No concious yet.

My mother has fdiffuse Cerebral Edema Because of Cardiac arrest. She is Having Little Body Movements, Little Eye Opening but No concious yet.

Tough problem: The edema is from leakage from vessels and cells which were deprived of oxygen and blood supply while the heart was stopped. This prevents them from working. Depending upon the length of time the brain was deprived as well as the resistance of the cells, as the edema clears there will be some recovery. There is no simple way to predict the timing; hopefully there will be much to gain.l ...Read more

If you have a heart attack and then are revived with cpr, will you have brain damage?

Maybe: This depends on the length of time the brain was without blood flow, and the situation after the person was revived. In fact now many patients after CPR can be treated with hypothermia, which involves cooling the body slightly while the patient is sedated, (roughly to a temp of 93 degrees f) for about 24 hrs, this lowers the risk of brain damage in many cases. Many other factors involved however. ...Read more

My sister went with oxygen for 7 minutes and a heart attack she a diabetic and had very low blood pressure kidney damage will she have brain damage?

My sister went with oxygen for 7 minutes and a heart attack she a diabetic and had very low blood pressure kidney damage will she have brain damage?

Not sure: Adults who are deprived of oxygen due to cardiac arrest for over 5 minutes usually suffer brain damage. However since she did not have a cardiac arrest and, despite very low blood pressure, she may have had enough cerebral circulation to avoid significant brain damage. However because of diabetes and smoking history, she may have come vascular disease which increases her risk. Hope for the best. ...Read more
