Am I at higher risk for injury in hockey with a low body fat percentage?

Am I at higher risk for injury in hockey with a low body fat percentage?

No u need Muscle mas: Athletes tend to be at low end of this scale due to their increased lean weight (muscle mass). While low levels of body fat seem to be related to improved performance, body composition alone is not a great predictor of sports success. A linebacker needs to have enough body mass (lean and fat weight) to generate high forces and avoid injury. Body fat among elite athletes vary largely so check up. ...Read more

If i don't excersize at all but am skinny and fit in the normal BMI range, will i still have a higher risk of diseases?

U R always @ risk: But u can reduce ur risk with a balanced diet ; regular exercise both weight ; cardio. If u find this hard 2 do on ur own, join a health club ; get into a group semi private program @ least 3x/wk 4 hour classes. U will find it enjoyable, meet some new friends ; because u r on a schedule, u r less likely 2 skip workouts. Try it 4 a while, most give u a trial period, ; u can quit if u don't like it. ...Read more

Need to know more: As triglyceride (tg) levels increase the number of LDL particles (ldl-p) is characteristically high. When ldl-p is high cardiovascular risk is elevated regardless of of ldl-c levels. Well i've had massive heart-attack in 2012 , had an icd put in and now they say that 75% of my heart isn't blood or oxygen am i at high risk for avr?

Meds/close f/u: An ischemic cardiomyopathy (cm) such as you have requires close followup with your cardiologist and regular assessment for arrhythmia and heart failure. The icd helps guard against sudden death as a result of dangerous ventricular arrhythmias (one of the major risks with cm). The other risk is of worsening heart failure. Your meds seem reasonable (consider Carvedilol instead of metoprolol ). ...Read more

I'm a sickle cell patient and over the past few years I've lost a considerable amount of weight. How can i get it back or gain some at least?

Is it your diet?: Do you take pain medications that may cause nausea or constipation leading to decreased appetite and/or decreased food intake? How about hydroxyurea (which you almost certainly should be on) ? That can sometimes cause nausea. Accutane is also known to cause weight loss. Ask your doctor help dive into medication-related causes of decreased appetite, if you think that is a possibility. ...Read more

Reason for a higher than expected resting heart rate in an athlete? mine is about 80-95. used to be in the 60's? i drink tons of water

Fast pulse: That is an abnormally rapid resting heart rate for a healthy young person. Causes include overactive thyroid, fever, anemia, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, anxiety, cardiac arrhythmias and certain stimulant medications. I recommend an evaluation by your physician and appropriate tests will be ordered. ...Read more

17yr old daughter is high level athlete. Put on monitor for a week due to complaints of fatigue with exertion. Came back with heartrate avg85 min 50 max208. Average seems awfully high for someone who is in such good shape?

Normal Heart Rate: Chloe,
The heart rates documented are not outside of the expected norm for someone that age. While an average rate of 85 may be a bit higher than expected for a well conditioned person it is hard to make a definitive judgement without knowing her activities while wearing the monitor. If, for example she was participating in several hours of sports during the day, it would increase her average rate ...Read more

This weight is thin: but wouldn't be classified as anorexic. Your ideal weight depends upon your gender, age, bone mass and genetics (speed of metabolism). Your anxiety is probably causing you to burn more calories than you want, so work on that with a therapist. Why are you on a high fiber diet? I would think a little good fat might help, unless you have other medical concerns. ...Read more

Does lower body fat equal higher testosterone? Say if a person has a 20% bodyfat and they cut down to 12% would said person have higher testosterone?

Not quite that way: If a person is already done with puberty, and over a period of less than a year he drops his body fat to a lower percentage, he is more likely just eating fewer calories and exercising more. If a person is a child going through puberty, his testosterone levels increase and his muscle mass increases (plus his body fat percentage decreases). ...Read more

What would be the result of doing high reps with low weight and low reps with high weight in the same workout? Would this add mass and hardness to my muscles or would one dominate the other?

What would be the result of doing high reps with low weight and low reps with high weight in the same workout? Would this add mass and hardness to my muscles or would one dominate the other?

Read long answer: Low wt and high number of reps leads to more toneing and conditioning. High wt and low reps leads to more muscle mass or bulk. I don't believe that one "dominates" the other but individuals are usually looking for one result or the other so they choose how they want to work with wts. ...Read more
