You need an orthopaedic exam, a screening x-ray, and then probably an MRI to look for a meniscus tear. It can also be other things but meniscus tear is very common with your story.

Start with cool pack: In general, we recommend ice initially for an acute injury of the knee. This is to minimize the swelling. Then after 48 hours switch to heat to increase the blood flow and increase healing. Rest, ice, wrap and elevate or 'RICE' are tips for handling acute injury.
